Miller, Globe, Arizona. Pair of images of Arizona Apaches, each 6.5" x 8.25" on 8" x 10" mounts. Both images show the same large group of Apache scouts, dismounted and mounted in the street of Globe with frame buildings, including the Globe Assay Office in background. Many of the scouts are wearing partial U.S. Army uniforms, several have U.S. flags, one is wearing a flag as a sash. Each image has inked inscriptions at margins. The first inscription reads: "My horse got left out in this picture X you can just see his foot. Our 13 Indians were picked from among the whole tribe on account of their riding and good shooting, they will go in the Indian Fight, also hold up a stage like they did in the early days. Globe Dec. 1st, 1899." There is an "X" at the right of the image showing the horse's foot referred to in the above. Near the left, in front, there are two crouching white men with pistols pointed at each other. The one on the right is identified in the image as "Col. Edmondson." The second image has the following inscription: "These 13 Indians &  scout are going to Phoenix carnival to participate in the parade and Indian Fight. They are white mountain Apache." The two men on horseback at the right of the image have a "2" and "3" above them. In the right margin, "2" is identified as "Col. Edmondson" and in the top margin "3" is identified at "Blackfoot Apache Chief." The man at left is identified as "Frank R. Scout." This second image has a horizontal crease right across the center!. So the first image is VG, the second has similar great content but is creased. Andrew Miller, the photographer was from Silver City, New Mexico. He was active in Globe, c. 1886; Bisbee, 1897. It is reported that he was killed by Yaqui Indians on August 3, 1899, in Sonora, Mexico. As you will note that the first image has a manuscript date on it of Dec. 1st, 1899. Obviously, if Miller was dead by then, either the image was taken earlier which is likely and the date written by someone else. The pair together. $2000
