OUT78. McAllister & Brother, Opticians, Philadelphia. CDV of a daguerreotype
of a Philadelphia street. On back is written "No. 48 Chestnut St. Dec. 1854."
The image shows the McAllister & Co. building. I have not been able to locate
the whereabouts of the original of this daguerreotype. It may no longer exist.
It is not in the collection of the Library of Congress or the Library Company of
Philadelphia. It is interesting that the image of the original daguerreotype is
dated Dec. 1854 and looking at the CDV below (OUT80), one can surmise that,
since some of the building signs and the bust of Ben Franklin is not shown in
this image, that this was taken subsequent to OUT80 and the McAllister firm was
in the process of relocating which they did in early 1855. It is also possible
that the original daguerreotype from which this image as made was taken by
Frederick DeBourg Richards (1822-1903), the indicated maker of OUT80. There is a
crease at the lower left corner of the CDV. G+. $350

Back of duplicate CDV with manuscript...
OUT80. Coonley & Wolfersberger, Philadelphia. CDV of a daguerreotype of No.
48 Chestnut St. showing the McAllister & Co. building. When I obtained this CDV
it was accompanied by an exact duplicate (back of which is shown above at right)
with the following manuscript on verso: "From a daguerreotype by Richards Dec.
1, 1854." This would be Frederick DeBourg Richards (1822-1903). The original
daguerreotype is in the Nelson-Atkins Museum from the Hallmark Collection. It is
illustrated on page 35 of Origins of American Photography, where it is
attributed to Mason. Contrast is somewhat light. G. $300
