The following Stereoview is a Lynn Skeels view of
President Harry Truman. This is from a rare privately produced Stereoview set.
These views were taken by Lynn Skeels from his Annual Baseball Outing sets that he
produced for private distribution. Lynn Skeels was the Photographer who produced
many of the Stereo-Travel Boxed Sets in the first several decades of this century. He was
in his sixties or seventies when he produced these views in the mid-to-late 1940's. This
view is part of the documentation of the activities of the "Lowell B. Mason
Baseball, Marching and Luncheon Club." Lowell Mason, the Chairman of the Federal
Trade Commission hosted annual luncheon gatherings in one of the US Senate's private
dining rooms for President Truman, who was his close friend, and many invited Senators,
Cabinet Members, Supreme Court Justices, etc. They would dine and place bets on a
blackboard regarding the outcome of the opening game of the Washington Senators' season.
After lunch they all went to the Washington home opener at Griffith Stadium as the guests
of Clark Griffith, the owner of the Senators. The President would throw out the first
ball, players would come up for his autograph, and a great time was had by all.

Pres95. E&HT Anthony. Prominent Portraits. No. 2969. Hon. Abraham Lincoln,
President of the United States. This is the same view as Pres103 below. Note that the
number of the view differs. As Ostendorf says "In
1864 and 1865 the E&HT Anthony Company published four different pairs of
President Lincoln on the "Portrait Gallery" stereograph cards (O-49, O-84,
O-103, and O-104). Their identification number, either "2968" or "2969," was
given to all four views." (Hamilton and Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs, An
Album of Every Known Pose. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1963, page
124.) 3-cent cancelled tax stamp on verso. G. $2350

Pres97. Joseph W. Warren, Fall River, Mass. This is President Grant on
Marth's Vineyard. G. $150

Pres103.
E&HT Anthony. Prominent Portraits. No. 2968. Hon. Abraham Lincoln, President of
the United States. This is Ostendorf-49 (O-49). "Exhausted by a train journey
during which he had traveled nearly two thousand miles and visited seven states,
Lincoln went to Brady's Washington studio, probably on Sunday, February 24,
1861, and sat (opposite), absorbed in problems, while Alexander Gardner took
five poses...Apparently concerned about the time the photographer was taking to
prepare the lighting and plates, the harried President-elect has just looked at
the watch which he holds, case still open, in his right hand."
(Hamilton
and Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs, An Album of Every Known Pose. Norman:
University of Oklahoma Press, 1963,
pps. 77-79). Ostendorf reports that "At this first Washington sitting,
Gardner also used a two-lens, or stereoscopic, camera" (p. 79). Yet later,
page 124, he says "Only about six stereographs of Lincoln were published
during his lifetime. They bear a publication date not later than 1865. With the
exception of the outdoor views of Lincoln at Antietam, which were taken with a
standard stereoscopic or two-lens camera, all of the contemporary published
stereographs of the President were made by combining two of the images
simultaneously recorded by a three- or four-lens camera." Some long-ago
collector has professionally attached black borders to this view. This could
have been done to make the view fit more snugly in the viewer or conceivably, as
a mourning statement. Evidence of a lost tax stamp remains on verso. Rich,
strong images. VG. $2500
