written "Cyrus Williams Esq. Taken between Christmas and New Years 1859," and
"Lois Williams Toledo, Taken between Christmas & New Years 1859." So we have two
identifications but I'd guess that the ones on the glass are correct and somehow

D245. Original Daguerreian Broadside (12" x 10") for "Splendid Daguerreotype
Miniatures, Taken in Every Style, by E.S. Hayden...." He must have been an

town and the address where he would be located. A great display piece, ready for
framing. VG. $150

D258. J. Gurney, NY. Quarter-plate daguerreotype of two children. While I
thought at first that the younger child was a girl, I have been informed by an
interested browser that it is likely that both children are boys based on the
hair style of the little brother. He is wearing a tunic rather than a dress. The tablecloth and the
tunic are beautifully tinted. The image retains
its original seals and is housed in a full leather case, weak at the spine. VG.

woman's arm onto her dress; a few other light wipes. There is an old reseal on

D279. J. Gurney, NY. Lot of 4 daguerreotypes, 2 signed by Gurney. First is a
quarter-plate daguerreotype of New York City Quaker Adonijah Jackson Underhill
(1800-1854) by J. Gurney, 189 Broadway, NY. Underhill was a NYC businessman and
the son of Adonijah Daniel Underhill and Mary Jackson of Jericho, L.I. In 1793
Adonijah Daniel Underhill received 200 acres of land in Jericho on Long Island,
along with slaves to work it. He immediately freed all the slaves and hired them
as "freemen." Underhill was active in anti-slavery activities and he was
involved in the development of a Quaker Meeting that is still active. A slightly
variant daguerreotype, also by Gurney no doubt taken at the same sitting, of
Adonijah Jackson Underhill was offered on ebay in October 2005 which led to the
identification of this group of daguerreotypes. That image is now in the
collection of a Quaker school near Philadelphia. This image has its original
seals and is housed in a full, split leather case.
The second image is a half-plate daguerreotype by Gurney of Underhill's son.
This image has its original seals and is housed in a full leather case.
The third image is a quarter-plate daguerreotype of a younger Underhill with his
son. This image has an old reseal and could use resealing. Housed in a
half-leather case.
The fourth image is a quarter-plate daguerreotype of the son holding the hand of
a younger sibling. There is a partial original seal. Housed in a thermoplastic
case (Berg 1-34, Harvest Motif) by Scovill Mfg. Co. The case is in good
condition with a few minor nicks.
4 daguerreotypes in all from one family, identified, 2 by Gurney; 3
quarter-plates; 1 half-plate. $2000
